Business Travel Secrets Revealed by a Frequent Flier

I've had people ask me often for advice on airlines, hotels, travel with children, etc, and I guess it's time I share some tips and tricks I've learned. Some of them seem brainers for experienced business travelers, and some small tricks of the trade I've learned the hard way.
Booking a flight:
1. Unless it is absolutely necessary to book at least two weeks in advance, preferably three. If you have elite status, the earlier you book the better your chances of an upgrade.
2. Stick to choose an airline and an airline that makes sense about where your airport of origin. If you live outside Chicago, to States with their airline of their choice. Based in Dallas, flying American. Based in Philadelphia, Fly USAir. I have people telling me all the time who refuse to fly a specific aircraft because of a bad experience they had with an airline. Let me tell you, there good, the bad and the ugly with all airlines and end of treatment was even. (Although the porters at PHL successfully motivated me to keep the U.S. Air at all costs in that city, thanks guys.)
3. Save your frequent flyer miles on flights expensive. Was it really worth flying for two years so we could take advantage of miles for a $ 200 to Denver? Frequent flyer miles must be replaced by first class flights, Hawaii, or international travel ... enjoy your reward! Moreover, they are victims of these loading rates up to get bonus miles when you check in. .. the value is not only there.
4. Become an Elite anyway you can and fight to keep. If you will not be able to maintain its elite status, they are called. If you are near, some airlines will allow you to maintain status. The Elite is not just for the updates. For example, I fly United Airlines. With elite status, he moved to the top of the list if I'm on hold. Do not pay to check bags. Yes, I know that Southwest does not charge to check bags ... but as a business traveler, Southwest is really worth the trouble? As an elite, also has a separate 800 number for customer service, which greatly reduces the "on hold" time.
5. Scales are not necessarily bad things. To get closer to elite status or the next level, consider the adoption of scales to increase their flight segments. I recommend you limit these trips only to return. Missing the connection on your way to the business meeting can get rid of a trip. Moreover, its wise to choose carefully your city stop. Choose scales in large cities, preferably the centers for your airline. Thus, if you lose your connection, it is likely another flight available later. I try to book my scales United in Denver as I know flying to Chicago about every 90 minutes or less
6. Earn Miles for other things you normally do. Make sure your credit card gets air miles. Join your clubs to eat and earn miles to eat at places you normally eat less. When shopping online, especially with United Airlines, the use of U.S. shopping center. Most major retailers are partners and simply asked to log in and then transfer directly to the retailers website. Popular stores such as Best Buy, Toys R Us, Target, and many others participate. This is also a great way to ensure that your miles are not taken away if they do not fly as much as most airlines require any mileage activity every year or so.
7. To get the best price and mileage benefits, the book directly with the airline in place, and not through Orbitz or other travel websites in bulk.
8. Be courteous to the gate agents, pilots, registration staff, etc. Remember, they work hard, have their advantages / salary reduction often, and most importantly ... it was not your fault that your flight is canceled or delayed. Do not make the call to have pulled his bag for inspection and that ultimately we want to help all they can do so much of his life more enjoyable.
9. Be efficient to go through security. Do not make a scene or have to be selected for a more "complete" search. If you decided to go through the new body scanning machines, is in your best interest to make sure their pockets are completely empty. Otherwise, count on getting a pat. If you are selected for a pat, do not give the worker the TSA a hard time. Its so excited about this part of your job as you. Wear shoes that can be easily taken in and out. Always remove the jacket before going through. Learn what belts / Watches / Jewelry / etc pass through X-ray machines without being off. And yes, your laptop / iPad has to go in its own container. Note luggage liquids rule. Following these tips will get you through faster and reduce your chances of being selected for a frisk.
10. Most U.S. flights are Boeing 737 or Airbus 320. Airbus seats are slightly wider, if that is a concern. Aisle seats will give us big boys a little more. When booking your flight, try to select a seat at the time. Getting stuck in a middle seat is almost as bad as it gets, especially if you are not very small.
11. When flight attendants asked to turn off their computers and cell phones, do it. Your email is not important enough for the hundreds of other passengers on the plane to delay the flight.
12. Understand that children cry on a plane. They are often scared by this new experience and most of the time, parents are doing everything possible.
13. Be the good guy. Good Karma is a great thing to have when traveling. Offer to switch seats so that a parent can sit with your children or a couple can sit together. Speaking as a parent, I can not tell you how much you mean to me if someone changes seats with me so I can sit with my children. It also does not hurt to offer to help put a bag in the overhead compartment if you see someone struggling.
14. It is your right to recline the seat, but the person behind you a favor and do it slowly.
15. Share the armrest.
16. Talking to your neighbor may make flights pass quickly, but if they do not want to talk ... without forcing them.
17. Say hello to the flight attendants when you board. I can not tell you how many times I see the flight attendants greet and people were taken away. A smile and a kind word can brighten any day. It is always safe to assume that someone gave them a hard time already today. If you really want to brighten your day, put a candy bar or two.
18. If the pilot is saying goodbye when you leave, I say again. The landing is the hardest thing for a driver to master. If you want to brighten your day, talk about how soft the landing was.
19. The turbulence that occurs, but if you hear a pilot tell the flight attendants to take a seat ... it will be realistic in the rough, very fast.
20. Do not abuse the privilege luggage. Putting an item in the head. And we are not surprised if asked at the door to check an item. Some travelers simply do not understand why they can not take your hand luggage size golf bag with them.
Hotels
1. Needless to say, but try to keep in the same hotel or at most, choosing between two brands and stick with them. Points clubs are free to join and the rewards are readily available. Some, such as Hilton Honors, gives hotel points and airline miles. One way to choose is to choose a hotel you like to spend your vacation and book your business stays under the mark. Usually book at Hampton Inns and Hilton there are many that are ideal for holidays. La Quinta also has a decent program and in particular, there is a very nice, new facility in Scottsdale, AZ I will take my family for the holidays because of my points.
Car Rental
1. Go to a website based on trips, such as Orbitz or Yahoo Travel and get the rates for all car rental companies in the area to travel and then go directly to the website of companies and particular. You will get the best rates and you will have the chance to enter your frequent flyer number.
The basic general rules:
1. Dress the part. I can tell you from experience, you will get treated better in a dress that is wearing torn jeans and a shirt vulgar.
2. Getting to the airport early. You can always have coffee, snacks, beer, etc, if things go quickly. Nobody cares that you're in trouble, because in all probability, are in a hurry too.
3. Do everyone a favor and do not bring food on board sucks. Most of the flights in the U.S. are just a few hours at most and you can buy a sandwich on the plane or eat before / after.
4. Nobody likes a drunk sitting next to them, exhibit self-control in the bar.
5. Do not put nasty things in the back of the seat cushion before leaving, I'm likely to get there on the next flight.
6. Be patient.
I hope some of these tips are useful to all and happy / safe travel to my colleagues who travel frequently!
